Lesson 4 : Focus ~ Ling Ling

***Click on the picture to enlarge!
Canon Rebel XSi
Manual mode
Aperture 2.8
Shutter Speed 1/30
ISO 100
Focal Length 50.0 mm

This week we are learning about focal modes and focal points....basically all about focusing! In this photo I used the right focal point and focused in on Lingling's eye. I chose an open aperture because I wanted to blur everything in the photo that was not within the focal point and I am very happy with the result. :)

I love the effect the open aperture has on this photo too! It looks as if we are peeking over the trunk and planning a sneak attack on her! You did a really fine job locking focus on the eye, as this can be challenging when you want your subject to sit still for a moment. The exposure is great too. Nice work!

Thank you, Candice! I feel like I'm actually getting the hang of this and I'm lovin' it!

  2. Seriously, you are making want to chuck my point and shoot! Thank you for sharing your pics and tips -- maybe one day I will get that camera I have had my eye on but too afraid of all the ISO; Aperture; Shutter Speeds - etc.

  4. Thanks Mari...I love her big blue eyes! She really is a pretty cat, but it's hard to get good pics of her because she doesn't stay still. I think she's ADD or ADHD which ever one it is? lol

Denise, sorry for making you want to chuck your point and shoot, but i do understand. I was afraid of all the differents modes and setting too, but this beginners class is awesome. When you get that camera you've had your eye on, you'll have to take this class and you'll be amazed at what you learn. :)

  5. Hey Debra! I love the pictures to the left of your blog. What a great idea! How do you do that? And you are lovely! :-)

  6. Mandy, you are so sweet! To get the pictures in the left sidebar, I had to change my template to a 3 column template. I found the instructions on how to do it here... http://www.thecutestblogontheblock.com/blog-secrets/145-how-to-get-a-3-column-template.html

It isn't easy to do the first time, so I would suggest that you make a test blog and try it on that first, until you get it right, before trying it on your existing blog. If you make one little mistake it will mess up your blog. I do love having the three columns! If you need any help with anything on your blog, just let me know and I will see if I can help you. :)

  7. Debra:

That we are in the same photography class is a hoot! I've been telling everyone I know about Candice. I have learned soooooooo much. I see you got a moon shot! Congrats. That has been the single most exciting accomplishment for me so far. I've tried for 2 years to get a decent shot of the moon over the town.

We should get together and compare class notes. I have a Canon Rebel XT and so do 2 of my friends. We compare notes and try to help each other.

  8. Susan, Candice is awesome isn't she? I am learning tons also and I can't wait to learn more. I've been trying to get pics of the moon since last christmas when I got my camera and some are ok, but not great and others are just bright blobs. I LOVE YOUR HARVEST MOON PIC OVER ASTORIA...IT IS AWESOME!!!

We really should get together and compare notes and maybe we can learn from one another. I have a Canon Rebel XSi...I don't know how that compares to your XT, but I'm sure the settings are pretty much the same.

Are you going to take the Portrait Photography Class at the end of this month?

  9. Debra - you asked about my son. Andy has been in the army for about 2 1/2 years. He did his basic training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, then his advanced training in Virginia. He then spent a year in South Korea and is now in Colorado. We had a great visit with him there in August. He works on the arming and electrical systems of the Apaches.
What is your son going in for and how long is he signing on for?

Got your message. Can you e-mail me at bwildman@charter.net? . I'm not the best at blogging - want to e-mail directly but not sure how.

Definately want to get together to compare note!

I loved the marble picture you posted in the class - very creative.

I'm off to teach a card class (scrapbooking is how I got into the whole photography thing!).
